We are honoured to announce a very special event at The Nest Hotel this winter: the arrival of Malcolm Pearse, renowned climber, explorer, and photographer, who will be joining us on Monday 7 July and Tuesday 8 July for two captivating evenings of storytelling, stunning photography, and personal reflection.

Malcolm is the son of legendary mountaineer R.O. Pearse, author of the iconic Barrier of Spears. Following in his father’s footsteps—quite literally—Malcolm has spent a lifetime immersed in the mountains. From the dramatic spires of the Drakensberg to the towering giants of the Himalayas, his adventures span continents, decades, and more than a few close calls.

All the Hills Are Home: An Extraordinary Memoir in Two Volumes

Malcolm’s recently released two-part memoir, All the Hills Are Home, chronicles a life lived at altitude—rich with history, humour, and heart-stopping adventure.

  • Volume One: The Drakensberg and Mountains of Africa
Presented on Monday 7 July at 6PM, this first volume brings us home—to the foothills of the Berg, where Malcolm’s love for climbing was born. Hear tales of lightning strikes, volcanic ascents, and epic treks through Africa’s most remote highlands.
  • Volume Two: The Himalayas and the Rest of the World
On Tuesday 8 July at 6PM, Malcolm will share stories from the far corners of the globe—flying into thunderheads, breaking his ankle on Kanchenjunga, and leading over 50 expeditions to the Himalayas through his company, Summit Ventures.

An Intimate Experience at The Nest

Both presentations are free of charge and will be hosted in The Nest Pub, with our à la carte menu available for public guests. Resident guests are invited to enjoy the talks as part of their normal four-course dinner.

Malcolm will also be mingling between the evenings—signing books, sharing personal anecdotes, and engaging with fellow adventurers. Volume One will be available for purchase on-site.

A Life of Adventure

From exploring the Galápagos and trekking in remote parts of Tibet, to surviving life-threatening mountain accidents, Malcolm’s stories are more than gripping—they’re deeply human. His books are not just memoirs, but practical guides and philosophical musings for anyone who feels drawn to high places.

With vivid imagery and remarkable insight, All the Hills Are Home is a tribute to exploration, resilience, and a lifelong love of nature.
