Exploring the Majestic Drakensberg: Hikes from The Nest Hotel
Hippo Pool
Duration: 40 minutes
Description: A short, enjoyable walk on our grounds. Follow the path below the dining room, head down the stairs to the river, turn right, and follow the signs to the Hippo Pool. Alternatively, you can take the Ramble Amble over the hill. This gentle walk offers a perfect introduction to the beauty of the area.
Sterkspruit Falls
Duration: 2 ½ hours
Description: This easy walk starts from the Monks Cowl Nature Reserve. Enjoy lovely views and drink from the icy, clear mountain streams along the way. A perfect hike for those looking to immerse themselves in nature without too much exertion.
The Grotto
Duration: 2 ½ hours
Description: Enter from the Drakensberg Sun and follow the path through the golf course. This hike is for the fit, involving a lot of climbing over rocks and streams. The first half takes you through a “rain forest” and the return journey through a “fern forest”.
The Sphinx
Duration: 4 hours
Description: Starting from the Monks Cowl Nature Reserve, this hike is for the fit and adventurous. It’s a steep walk but rewards you with wonderful views of the surrounding landscape.
Bushmen Paintings
Duration: 2 ½ hours
Description: This easy walk begins at the Drakensberg Boys Choir. Wander through the bushveld into caves adorned with over 15 ancient Bushmen paintings. An interesting and educational hike suitable for all fitness levels.
The Cascades
Duration: 2 ½ hours
Description: Enter from the Cathkin area for a hike that demands fitness. With steep slopes and wonderful views, this walk is both challenging and rewarding.
Crystal Falls
Duration: 2 hours
Description: On your way to the Sphinx from Monks Cowl Nature Reserve, take a walk out in the open to Crystal Falls. This is a moderately strenuous hike with beautiful scenery.
The Gorge
Duration: 2 ½ hours
Description: Also starting from Monks Cowl Nature Reserve, this hike features hot conditions and a fairly flat path with a few uphills. It’s a great way to experience the diverse terrain of the Drakensberg.
Fern Forest
Duration: 1 ½ hours
Description: Located in the Cathkin Park area, this gentle walk offers magnificent views and is not too strenuous. It’s ideal for those looking for a relaxing yet scenic hike.
Circular Water
Duration: 2 ½ hours
Description: This hike is fairly flat, making it accessible for most fitness levels. Enjoy a leisurely walk with picturesque surroundings.
Stable Caves
Duration: 6 hours
Description: Only for the fit and adventurous, this very strenuous walk requires packed lunches and plenty of water. The effort is rewarded with stunning views and a sense of accomplishment.
Mike’s Pass
Duration: 4 hours
Description: A scenic drive close to Cathedral Peak, Mike’s Pass takes you up a winding road to a majestic view of the main rockface of the Berg. This is a less strenuous option that still offers incredible scenery.
Spioenkop Reserve
Duration: 3 hours
Description: An excursion to the nature reserve, dam, battlefield, and museum. This outing is both informative and scenic, perfect for history enthusiasts and nature lovers alike.
Top of the Little Berg
Duration: 3 – 6 hours
Description: Starting in the Monks Cowl Nature Reserve, this hike is for the very fit. It’s a strenuous walk passing the Sphinx and up to the Breakfast Falls, onto the contour path on top of the Little Berg. The panoramic views are well worth the effort.
