Meadowsweet Combined School is home to 693 learners from Grade R to Grade 12. Today the Grade 12 Physical Science students delighted in a special visit from Dr Derek Fish of the UniZulu Science Centre, University of Zululand.
Dr Fish has produced sixteen hours of videos covering all the skills a learner would need to complete the matric physics exam. The videos were demonstrated to the teacher Mrs. Shabalala as well as to the learners – they are fun, interactive and educational. Their teacher was given a memory stick containing all of the videos plus many other additional programmes to promote learning. Each learner was given a 72-page book to accompany the video presentations. Booklets were sponsored by the SA Institute of Physics as part of a nationwide campaign to assist matric learners.
This local visit was made possible by The Nest Hotel, who not only sponsored Dr Fish’s accommodation, but also brought sandwiches and juice for the ten grateful learners. Hotel owner, Shelley Longmore, expressed her delight at being able to assist and wished the matric learners all the best for their examinations.
It was a pleasant surprise for everyone to discover on arrival at the school that the headmaster, Mr Mazibuko, was a former employee of The Nest Hotel from 1994 to 1996 when he left to pursue his teaching studies. He returned in 2000 in a management position with former owners of the hotel. As well as his duties as head of Meadowsweet, he delights in teaching English at the school.
As a final parting gift, the learners were given a solar powered reading light sponsored by Unite to Light from the USA. With none of these learners having electricity in their home, they were thrilled to receive these life-changing lights.
