“Love is friendship that has caught fire. It is quiet understanding, mutual confidence, sharing and forgiving. It is loyalty through good and bad times. It settles for less than perfection and makes allowances for human weaknesses”. Ann Landers
According to one of the many legends, Claudius II decided that single men were better soldiers than the married ones with families. He forbade young men to marry however Priest Valentine did not agree with Claudius’s ruling and performed marriages in secret. Needless to say, Claudius wasn’t very thrilled when he discovered Priest Valentine betrayed him and had him beheaded. Same goes for Bishop Saint Valentine.
So why on earth do we celebrate Valentine’s Day, also known as The Day of Love? The Valentines’ wanted love to prevail, so we honour them in a way. We have the Love birds to thank for this, as February is the time of the year when they tend to find their mates. In the 1700’s in England, people started giving flowers, cards and confectionary to express their love for one another. A tradition which continues to this day.
There are many different versions and reasons why people celebrate Valentine’s Day. However, I think the above makes for a good story. You have the villain, the heroes and then love prevails.
